cuckmere house challenge

Cuckmere Challenge LogoThe CUCKMERE HOUSE CHALLENGE is another tough Seaford race, originally organised by a former Seaford Strider, which is held every year to raise funds for the local Cuckmere House School. It was originally a demanding 10 mile multi-terrain event, but has now been changed to a 10K that takes in many of the nearby beauty spots and much of the scenery, such as the spectacular Seaford Head and the charming Cuckmere Valley. It is therefore compulsory for each competitor to spend the whole run admiring the view!

The course consists of one lap finishing back in the School grounds, with a medal for everyone who completes the run, and trophies for the outright winner, 1st senior man & 1st senior woman, as well as prizes for 1st male and female in the Vet and SuperVet categories, a trophy for first junior and for the 1st team (4 to count).

This year's race was on Sunday 18 October 2009

race report 2008

Last year's Cuckmere Challenge was held over one lap of the usual course and took place on one of the worst days for some time. Continuous rain and a biting wind did not deter the competitors however and a good time was had by all. Advertised as a 10 Kilometre race, it became apparent that the course measurement was quite a bit short, coming in at around 8k. Despite this and the appallling weather, everyone seemed to enjoy the day and especially the brief excitement of thinking they had set incredible personal bests. The overall race winner was Thomas Roach who romped round in 29:41, followed by last year's 10 mile winner Geoff Gray from Seaford Striders who took the trophy for 1st Senior Man in 30:46. Third home and 1st Junior was Matthew Eade of Seaford Striders who recorded a marvelous 30:58. The first woman to finish was Gill Wheeler of Hailsham Harriers who finished in 34:24 to take the prize for 1st Vet Woman. !st Vet Man was Danny Garbett of Bexhill Runners in 35:29.

Natasha Fuller of Lewes AC took the trophy for 1st Senior Woman in 37:53, while in the Supervet category, 1st man was Terry Avey of Phoenix in 38:22, and 1st Woman was Wendy Joy of Seaford Striders in 36:41.

In the team event, the prize was awarded to the Seaford Striders team of Geoff Gray, Matthew Eade, Dave Holden and Wendy Joy, just ahead of 2nd placed Phoenix AC.
