Seaford Striders held their annual Mince Pie 10 Mile run on the 9th December, welcoming in the festive season with a bigger race field and a new course record.
The winner, James Baker of Chichester Runners, completed the road and downland challenge in just 55:14, with an astonishing 4.5 minute lead on the rest of the field of 600 runners, up 200 from the 2017 race. James also won last year’s race in a time of 58:53 amid high winds and lashing rain.
The Mince Pie 10 starts and finishes at Peacehaven Leisure Centre before heading into countryside stretches around Telscombe and Saltdean.
Following on from James Baker’s speedy finish were Darryl Hards of Brighton Phoenix in 1:02:35, Michael Caffyn of Run Academy Worthing in 1:02:59, James Ward of Lingfield RC in 1:03:14 and Thomas Caffyn (Run Academy Worthing) in 1:04:21.
Tara Shanahan of Arena 80 AC was the first woman to cross the line in 1:06:43. She was followed by Sue Fry (1:08:50), Catherine Bounds (1:10:09), Sarah Underwod (1:10:41) all from Hailsham Harriers and Adrien Ferandji in 1:11:07.
Even with the significant increase in the places, the popular run – voted one of the UK’s top ten races by Runner’s World Magazine – sold out even faster than last year. The race is the Seaford Striders’ main fundraiser and supports SERV Sussex (Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers) – servsussex.org.uk. Volunteer motorcyclists from SERV lead out the runners at the start of the run, as well as accompanying the winner on the home stretch.
The race also attracts individuals and teams keen to undertake the 10 mile challenge in festive fancy dress as well as competitive runners. This year’s event included runners dressed as a turkey, Christmas puddings and even a Christmas tree.
The run was enthusiastically marshalled by the members, family and friends of Seaford Striders RC, some also donning festive fancy dress. As with previous years, the event was sponsored by David Jordan Estate Agents.Striders running the race were Jeff Young in 1:07:36 (17th), Tracy Pragnell (1:39:39) Hilary Ward (1:50:59), Holly Miller (1:44:18) and Simon Nixon (1:54:33).
The Mince Pie 10 Miler is a very popular multi-terrain event which is contested over a challenging ten mile course, and sees many entrants returning year after year for a pre Xmas work-out!
